Patients with severe burn injury tend to have marked hyper-metabolism and catabolism, which are associated with morbidity and mortality. The common symptoms during the recovery of burn injury are
•Insulin resistance and hyperglycemia
•Skeletal muscle proteolysis
•Adipose tissue lipolysis
To investigate the underlying mechanism of these symptoms after burn injury, more than 200 patient samples from each of four tissue types, including fat, muscle, skin and blood, were collected and processed by a large-scale Collaboration funded by NIGMS, the Glue Grant "Inflammation and Host Response Injury", to study genomic responses in human to burn injury.
The number of samples processed with Affymetrix U133 plus v2 GeneChip microarrays (including more than 54,000 probe sets corresponding to ~25,000 genes in human) for each tissue type is listed in the table below.
